Meet Sonoko Sakai, the woman behind our favorite curry powder. After 20 years working in the film industry, Sonoko decided to quit in 2009 to pursue her love of food and Japanese cooking. Since then, Sonoko has built a loyal following with her cooking classes and webinars, has written multiple cookbooks, and developed a line of pantry goods all out of her Highland Park home. She is a creative in the truest sense of the word; finding beauty in simplicity, and always excited to share it with others. Everything she creates is with intention, and her genuine enthusiasm for teaching others about Japanese cooking and culture is infectious.
Being in her home, and witnessing her creation process with the team of women she collaborates with, was an honor and a memory worth cherishing. Every tin is an example of the true effort that is involved in toasting, grinding, mixing and filling each tin by hand (not to mention the difficult label process!) The result is a curry powder that continues to surprise us with how versatile it truly is.
