Botanica is a women-owned restaurant and market in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, owned by Emily Fiffer and Heather Sperling. They serve contemporary, market-driven Californian cuisine that’s colorful, vibrant and satisfying, emphasizing the bounty of what grows around us. They are majorly into vegetables, wild Pacific seafood, local, organic dairy and heirloom grains. Above all else, they aim to make beautiful, nourishing food that makes you feel good.
Before opening Botanica, Emily and Heather both worked in media, writing and editing for various food and lifestyle publications. After commiserating about their shared frustration at the dearth of healthful, vegetable-forward options at restaurants, as well as their mutual love for cooking and bringing people together around a table, they dreamed up a restaurant that delivered on both fronts. Botanica opened in 2017 and quickly was entrenched in the community. Today, their kitchen is run by Zarah Khan, a Seattle native whose Middle Eastern roots inform Botanica's menu.
Serving delicious food is just a part of Botanica's overall mission; even more important is their commitment to nurturing a workplace based on communication and comfort, equal pay, benefits, and positivity. They believe a restaurant simply cannot function without support and softness to balance the day-to-day grind. It is their hope that they can be a small force for change within the restaurant industry, one that prioritizes stability, care and wage equality.
